How to Write a First Message That Gets a Reply
A match is only the start. The first message decides whether a conversation happens at all. Here's how to write one that stands out, without lines that feel scripted.
Why "hey" doesn't work
A one-word opener puts all the effort on the other person. On busy apps, many people simply don't answer. A message that shows you read their profile is far more likely to get a reply.
A simple formula
- Notice something specific in their photos or bio.
- Comment on it with a little personality.
- Ask an open question that's easy to answer.
Examples
- "Is that the Amalfi coast in your third photo? I need to know if the lemon gelato lives up to the hype."
- "You said you make the best tacos in town. Bold claim. What's the secret?"
- "A fellow board game person. What's the game you always win?"
Things to avoid
- Comments about someone's body in the first message.
- Copy-and-paste lines sent to everyone.
- Long paragraphs. Keep it to one to three sentences.
- Pushing for a phone number straight away.
Keeping the conversation going
Match their energy, share something about yourself, and ask follow-up questions. Conversations that only go one way fade quickly.
Moving to a date
After a good exchange, suggest something concrete: "I'm enjoying this. Want to grab a coffee on Saturday afternoon?" A clear, low-pressure plan beats weeks of chatting.
If they don't reply
Don't take it personally. People get busy, lose interest, or rarely open the app. One gentle follow-up is fine; after that, move on.
